Student Reflections from Workday 1 in New Orleans

Okay…here’s our first batch of student entries.  We’re just letting the kids write whatever they want as a way to process their experience.  What you will read will be unedited and just what their thinking.  Please use them to help inform your prayers for the kids.  They’re all doing a great job and working really hard!  We’re so blessed!  So…here goes…

Hey guys, work group orange worked on lots today in the ninth ward.  You have to take a ferry to get there and its a really poor neighborhood.  Michael, Brantley, Aaron, Sam, and I chopped through The Jungle and finding a mint condition car hood.  The damage to the ninth ward is unbelievable.  There was a trailer on top of a fence. See you guys soon. -David

hello, the trip here was pretty cool. All of the girls have new talents, such as staying up all night, or getting every girl to sleep in a bus for 3 hours, or even getting 15 girls showered without running out of hot water. When we first got to new orleans we were all looking around and thought that new orleans didn’t really need any work, but when we got more into the city we saw all that had happened. Russell read us some facts about what happened and it was crazy. We saw how high the water level was. Today we worked painting a school, and on our way out of the school i looked across the street and saw a man come out of his house and i looked at the mans house and all of his house was torn apart and he didn’t have a real door, it was just a screen door. it made me relaze how much help these people need, i hope that while we are here that we can give them that.-savannah

Hey. Haha today i painted an old school. it was really fun and i am looking forward to doing more fun stuff. I also saw my old friend Henry that i met in 2005 at our school because he was a Katrina escapee. haha i dont even know if thats a word. haha. It was amazing to catch up on things and fun to make new friends and to get to know the ones that i have better.  – Sammy , DO YOU KNOW?

  1. This blog is very interesting. I’m so glad to read and know your your experiences, especially in the ninth ward. We are praying that your work there will change the lives of the people you meet as well as your own — in the best ways.
    Thanks for your posts.

  2. Wow, loved the kids comments. Can’t believe how
God’s amazing grace is working through these hard working kids. Keep up the pace and know that God is smiling on all of you.

  3. Sammy,

If you see Henry again have him tell his older brother Christian that Mrs. Strange says hello. I had Christian in Geometry the year they were in Midland. I hope they are doing well and I’m glad to hear you got to see Henry. Hope you have a great time helping out in New Orleans.

  4. Hello Everyone! Sounds like you are having a great time and a meaningful experience. Isn’t it amazing to be able to help those in need and to feel like you are making positive changes in the world around you! God’s love is demonstrated through you and what you are doing for others. Savannah if you come across the head mission guy named Tim Martin, say hello and that you will see him at the next family reunion. (He is Travis and Stuarts dad). ~ Cheryl Ross

  5. Kyle – I knew you would never write a blog cuz it’d be too much like school work (UGH — who would CHOOSE to read or write in the summer???), but I wanted you to know that I’m so proud of your servant’s heart, and I know you are working hard to improve the lives of those who need it most. Also, you know I’m really getting old and confused. I can’t remember if your Gotcha Day is on Friday or Saturday, but whichever it is … I’m SO GLAD we got you 15 years ago! Now I’m gonna cry! – Susan Atchison
